≪五月の言葉≫

五月は「皐月」。花菖蒲が咲くので、「菖蒲(あやめ)月」とも。
英語名のMayはローマ神話で豊穣を司る女神マイア(Maia) の名に因むとか。

メーデー、武者人形、鯉のぼり、ちまき、「母の日」とカーネーション。
この月、日本では「憲法記念日（3日）」、「緑の日（4日）」、「子どもの日（5日）」と
祝日が続くゴールデン・ウィーク。

Words for May

May is called Satsuki in the old calendar. It is also called ayamezuki, because
the ayame (irises) are in bloom. It is said that the English name of “May” comes from
the name from Maia, the goddess of abundant harvests in Roman mythology.

May Day, samurai dolls, carp banners, chimaki rice cakes,
Mother’s Day and carnations.
In Japan, this month also has the chain of holidays known as “Golden Week”―
Constitution Memorial Day (May 3), Greenery Day (May 4) and Children’s Day (May 5).
